Belbin Training – High performing teams

14 Apr

Have you ever been part of a team, where, despite all your efforts, consistently fails to deliver? Or lucky enough to be involved in a team that just works – able to deliver on the task every time while maintaining supportive, co-operative relationships?

And have you ever thought how useful it might be to be able to predict the effectiveness of a team before a project begins? “

A new year brings a new leadership team, new projects and thus new teams have to be formed. Accordingly.  To kick-off 2016, JCI Curepipe organised a one-day training on team development based on the BelBin Management Program. The training was delivered by two highly qualified trainers; Senator Christer B Jansson and Senator Inger Melkersson Jansson on Saturday the 16th of January 2016

In this training, we explored the roles social psychologist Meredith Belbin identified that people assume in teams, and how to combine these roles for team effectiveness.

People are more engaged and productive when they play to their key strengths. Belbin is an international training programme that empowers individuals to fulfil their potential at work; and helps organizations to bring together the right people to form high performing teams.

After many years of research into team behaviour and performance in the workplace, Belbin identified nine key types of behaviour.  We call these the nine Team Roles (refer to table below).  Each successful team had one of each of the nine Team Role behaviours present.  This does not mean that each team needs to have nine people in it, since individuals can perform more than one Team Role.

From “Belbin Team Roles” published online at Belbin.com.

Using Belbin throughout your organisation will help individuals to fulfil their potential by identifying their key strengths, and enable the right people to be brought together to form high-performing teams.

Since JCI is an organization made of teams at all levels, knowing and combining our ‘roles’ will prove to be a way for us to “be better teams” to enable us to create positive change in our society. In fact, it will be beneficial not only to individuals in their JCI Career but in their professional careers as well.

By the way, my team role preferences revealed by Belbin Training are implementer and team worker. I am eager to know yours. So do comment below 😀
