How did you join JCI?
I have known JCI since my college days. I had attended a few events. From that time, I had decided I will be a member someday. In 2007, Jessen Valaythen, a past and very active JCI Curepipe member suggested that I join the organisation. I accepted immediately. I joined JCI for networking. Later on, I discovered the other development opportunities available in JCI. My career path is as follows:
2008 Acting Local Vice President
2009 Local Secretary
2010 Local President
2011 Immediate Past President
2012 National Vice President
2013 Deputy National President
2014 National President
2015 National Immediate Past President
What is your most favourite memory as a JCI Member?
It has to be 2010 when I was Local President of JCI Curepipe. I was surrounded with a large pool of committed members. We worked hard and played hard as well. We were all enjoying every moment spent in JCI and at the end of the year we had accomplished some great things. 2010 will be always my favourite year in JCI. I would like to seize this opportunity to thank all members who have worked for me and the organisation at that time and made my year as Local President a year I will always cherish.
Least favourite memory? And what did you learn from that?
The least favourite memory has to be when I was candidate for the post of 2012 National Vice President. There was a strong lobby against my candidature. I refused to be involved in those dirty games at that time to go and ask for votes. I was confident that my career path and my contribution to the organisation was enough to show what I was capable of and I chose to leave the decision to those who will be voting. They had to decide whether they wanted me on the National Board or not. I was finally elected. The learning from it is that always be true to yourself and your convictions and let things unfold by themselves. Keep walking and keep doing the right things. Ultimately you have to be rewarded for your effort.
JCI nowadays seem to be facing a problem with retaining members. What advice would you give local board members to keep their volunteers motivated?
Love the people you are working with. If they feel that you really care, your team will do whatever it takes to get the Local Organization to work in a focused way and in the same direction. If people feel that you are not keen to work with them they will see it immediately and your results will be poor.
Be humble, no one wants to work with arrogant leaders.
Your positive words are the inspiration for your team. Remember to praise every success, no matter how small.
Your wish for JCI Curepipe in 2016
I wish JCI Curepipe to continue growing as an organisation and accomplish the mission of JCI which is to provide development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change. JCI Curepipe should work in close collaboration with JCI Mauritius and other Local Organisations to become the leading network of young active citizens in Mauritius.
