Peace Week Celebrations

05 Nov

JCI Curepipe held from 16 September 2019 to 21 September 2019, a Peace Week for celebrating International Peace Day. This peace initiative was memorable to JCI Curepipe given that we have always adopted the concept Peace is Possible in each of our projects by mobilising young people worldwide to create awareness, advocate, take action and commit to an everlasting world peace. Each day being packed with numerous peace activities, we were to a certain extent successful in uniting different NGOs, the youth and the public to reflect on the notion of peace in Mauritius.

Initiated in 2016, the Peace is Possible campaign stood this year at its 3rd edition. Each year, there were new initiatives by the JCI Curepipe members to commemorate World Peace Day, histories being presentations in secondary schools, campaigning in RHT public buses, peace walk by NGOs in 2016; collaboration with the Kids for Peace chapter international and also being the first in Indian Ocean to have this affiliation in 2017; and distribution of an Inner Peace Manual in secondary schools to be adopted as part of their activity period in 2018.

Our peace day celebrations started on Monday 16th September 2019 with an inspirational peace message communicated to the young girls at Forest Side SSS Girls. The peace message focused mainly on world peace issues, how technology is taking over the world and how youngsters could be the change for a better future.

Our second and third day of the peace week was focused mainly on our fourth day, the 19th of September, whereby we donated 4 boxes worth of groceries, baby foods, female hygienic products and so much more to a shelter in St Pierre, namely Safe Haven Shelter.

On the 20th of September, we had organised a peace activity at the Soflo mall in Floreal. We had a peace tree with leaves reading a peace quote written by the public and we have also engaged kids into our activity that day by setting out an Art corner for kids.

The grand finale of our peace week was our Act for Peace show organised for Saturday, 21st of September. With the collaboration of our 4 Kids for Peace Chapters, our show comprised of performance from our 4 NGOs, speeches by our JCI members working on the peace project as well as the Chief Guest. The show reflected the interest of so many people present to Act for Peace and participate in spreading peace. This enthusiasm from our collaborators and our members helped make this event a successful one.
