The art of team-building – Trekking Le Pouce

15 Apr

Le Pouce Mountain is the third highest mountain in Mauritius, peaking at 812m and is named as such because of its thumb-shaped peak. This hike to the top of Le Pouce Mountain is well-known to be simple enough for a nice family walk or superb outing with friends.

We decided to do a team building activity to strengthen our bonds and further cultivate our leadership qualities. Whilst the climb of Le Pouce is a relatively easy one, the most challenging part is the ascension of the Thumb’s “nail”, i.e., the topmost of the mountain. Even if no climbing equipment is required, we had to be careful after going through a small path of dense nature when we reached the last slope. Arriving there, we all took some time to relax our legs a bit before starting the final ascent. Despite losing our way a few times, we eventually made it to the top. And that was the greatest gift of the day: An unbelievable and magnificent 360 degree view of the North and its little Islands namely Coin de Mire & Ile Plate, the Port Louis Harbour & docks, the Champs de Mars race course, the neighbouring mountains, the sugar cane plantations, the West coast, and the highland regions of Curepipe & Quatre Bornes. What a sight we were bestowed with! It was worth all the efforts made.

We all got to understand how the best of rewards in life come after some form of hardships. This activity also enabled us to work better as a team for we were constantly looking out of each other in an environment we were not used to.

As my first experience as project director for a team building activity, it was very enriching for I was able to gather more experience in the logistics aspects such as food and transport for all our attendees. Around 25 JCI and non-JCI attendees were present and despite my fear of having a bad weather, we all climbed Le Pouce in a joyful mood without being too tired. Huge thanks to all those who made it especially to my Local President Veerendra and Local Secretary Krishnee who helped out in making this team building a successful one.
