Public speaking is an essential skill for future leaders in order to motivate others towards positive change.

The 2015 JCI Mauritius Public Speaking Championship, a flagship project of JCI Mauritius hosted by JCI Quatre Bornes, was held on Saturday the 8th August 2015 at Municipal Council Room of the Municipality of Port Louis.

In order to prepare the participants for the event, training on public speaking was organised on the 31st July 2015 at the JCI Mauritius Secretariat. The trainer, Senator Aruna Pulton was able to impart her enthusiasm to the participants and boost their motivation for the event.

On the day of the event, the 10 contestants from different JCI Local Chapters were to deliver their speeches for about five to seven minutes each. They showcased their abilities and shared their ideas with great excitement and enthusiasm on this year’s topic “Earth’s great treasure lies in human personality”, which is also a line from the JCI Creed. This line was proposed in order for the event to be in line with the celebration of the hundredth anniversary of the JCI movement.

The Jury made up of the Chief Judge, 2008 JCI Executive Vice President Senator Aruna Pulton followed by Dr Jimmy Harmon – Director of Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture Trust Fund and Miss Darshini Narain – President of Aurora Toastmasters club of Dubreuil were faced with the difficult task of choosing the winners.

The winner was then proclaimed to be Miss Woomadevi Coothen of JCI City Plus and the first runner up was Mr Ashish Padaruth also of JCI City Plus and second runner up was Miss Yajna Govind of JCI Quatre Bornes.

The Championship was a big success due to the participation of the contestants, the Jury Panel and also the Organising team consisting of Ms Simi Gopaul as Project Director, together with Ms Dana Sunassee, Ms Vrinda Bhujun, Ms Tasweena Girdhari, Mrs Stephanie Royapen-Nookia, Ms Lakshana Sumboo and Mr Faizal Sheikchan.
