And the Cup Runneth Over

2010 has been a year full of activities under the Individual Development area of opportunity in JCI Curepipe. This was achieved partly by a judicious decision to have two brainstorming sessions among members in late December 2009 and early January 2010 by the 2010 JCI Curepipe Board members. The outcome of these meeting: an insight of the topics which interested members, and in which they felt they needed further individual development.

From there on, it was a free-wheel drive. The topics were already known and what remained was to find appropriate resource persons to conduct those training.

Participants of JCI Curepipe's Project Management and Presentation Skills TrainingThe first of a series of high-profile training started as early as February 2010 with the JCI Curepipe PMPS event, where PMPS stood for “Project Management and Presentation Skills”. The event had two resource persons, both Professionals and experts in their respective fields.

The event had two main objectives:

  1. Give members and aspiring members an insight of project management aspects, in view of a year full of projects; and
  2. Give members an apercu of how to prepare presentations, as they may all, as young executives, be called upon to present their findings every now and then in their professional life.

Later during the year, JCI Curepipe organised another event, geared towards both personal development and business. The title was equally catchy: STSP, Stock Market and Stock Purchase. JCI Curepipe realised that its members and target audience are mostly young executives, above 18 years of age, earning respectable salaries, and often with the ideal of saving for future, through the known and direct route or by developing strategies for a quick profit.

The resource persons managed to convert a world of figures and speculations into simple concepts that was appreciated by all. Participants played their role fully and had several questions for the resource persons, the most expected one being: “So, how do I get rich very fast?”

It was a half day session and culminated once again into all participants being offered delicious food, and cosy sitting arrangement, at the IVTB Canteen. This was the first part of the Individual Development session, and JCI Curepipe intends to launch the second part, namely, How to Purchase Stocks, very soon.

Next, during the year, JCI Curepipe launched its “Tips, Tricks and Techniques in Photography” (T3P) Individual Development programme. This was an event carried out in the premises of JR School and was also a house-full event. A special thanks here to all those who showed interest and whom we had to refuse, due to space restriction; we will be doing the second batch of training soon.

The event took place over 4 weeks, on Saturday afternoons. And afterwards, many a Saturday afternoon was spent discussing about aperture, lenses, focus and frame. The event ended by the presentation from each participant, of what they had learnt, summarised in 4 shots, one each of a portrait, of an architecture or building, of a landscape and a cloud-scape.

Many showed impressive skills and the resource persons were more than happy with the participation. The event also saw the famous love words from a wife to her hubby: “You can sell your 4×4 and buy me a camera”… ouch… that hurts 😉

2010 is nearly over, but our Individual Development programmes are still very much in the limelight. Two forthcoming events will be about personal grooming and accompanying techniques and business negotiating skills. Both topics were highly sought out by members during the initial brain-storming sessions and both have been kept for last, to create accrued togetherness as we move towards the end of the 2010 Board’s mandate.
