Health and Wellness
Healthy people are fundamental to building a successful society. Projects related to this stage will address barriers that stand between citizens and healthy lives. Solutions may include disease prevention, sanitation, nutrition and access to medical treatment. Projects related to MDG 1: End Poverty and Hunger, MDG 4: Child Health, MDG 5: Maternal Health and MDG 6: Combat Disease will apply to this stage.
The Health of Mauritian citizens is an issue which has been dealt by JCI Curepipe for 3 consecutive years now through concrete actions. As members of JCI Curepipe, we share the belief that in order to create positive changes, collective actions are needed to improve ourselves and the world around us.
The 2014 JCI Curepipe Health Campaign will continue to focus on promoting healthy nutrition through simple and accessible meals and also sensitise the community on the two main diseases in Mauritius which is cancer diabetes.
The key objectives of the Health Campaign Programme is to sensitize people on the following:
- The importance of eating a balanced meal in order to live a longer, healthier and happier life.
- Awareness Programs with particular focus on cancer in collaboration with Specialist Health Partners.
- Instilling the willingness to cook balanced meals in partnership with corporates in the food sector, nutritionist via various creative activities which would also include, but not limited to, demonstrations, leaflets, and booklets to take back home. It has been proved that following an forum/awareness session, the majority of the attendees will remember a small 3% fraction of the information provided, thus proving the need for material support which will used as reminders and guide.
In this context, an awareness session was held on Saturday 26 April 2014 at Centre Polyvalent Residence Joachim in Curepipe, with the audience beings kids from the age of 5 to 16. The awareness session was delivered by aspiring member Divya Poorun who is a clinical dietician. The awareness session started with a survey given to the kids to assess their knowhow on healthy eating habits which was then followed by the presentation and thereafter group presentation by the kids. The kids were then given another survey form to compare the results before and after the awareness session. Gift packs were given as giveaways to culminate the session.
We were honored by the presence of the Honourable Minister Michael Sik Yuen who also gave a small speech on healthy eating.
Lastly we would like to thank our sponsors Le Meritt, SKC Ltd and UDesign for their collaboration for the first awareness session and also members from JCI Curepipe and other local chapters for their continuous support.
